Who do you think the best bands are? Of all time, or of the moment. I think the chemistry of a band is important to consider, because it's kind of like a machine. If all the pieces fit together, the groove is gonna be there, and it'll be music to your ears.

Also worth considering is a band's longevity, and how much shitty material they've put out. That's why I wouldn't put a band like Pink Floyd on this list, because they released an album full of animal tracks. FUCK... THAT...

My picks:

Creedence Clearwater Revival may be the best band ever. They fuckin' rocked, and only made a finite number of albums, but EVERY track is great. The same can be said about Led Zeppelin. Those guys never had any dud tracks. Or at least a mere handful of mediocre ones at best.

The Rolling Stones never disappoint me, either. They've released a lot more material, which gives them more room for error for the harsh critics, but I tend to like all their tracks. They have so many goddamn hits! The Beatles got a little more druggie/weird with some tracks, but they're otherwise almost on par.

Another thing about these bands is that they didn't change their core lineup much, if at all. It's all about that chemistry, and these are generic examples, but I still fucking love these bands. There are probably a few other great examples out there, but I can't think of them right now.

NOFX then, even Liberal Animation had decent stuff. Fat Mike is the greatest song writer alive, perhaps ever

Haha, I haven't listened to NOFX since I was in high school. They're funny, but I wouldn't call their music particularly "good". I mean maybe for a skate punk band.

I'm talking about the songs, i.e. music & lyric's.
There albums are just a collection of the perfect 3 minute pop songs

If you're not familiar with Propagandhi, you might want to check out this album: https://youtu.be/AI130b4tMjs , I would consider it a better version of NOFX.

Okay, but just to let you know after their second album, their sound changed drastically. They went from poppy skate punk to hardcore punk/crossover thrash.

I can't name a Sonic Youth song either. Wouldn't know it if I heard it, but my sister made over 3700 bucks the other day off a Sonic Youth T-shirt on Ebay, apparently in pretty lousy condition. Some kind of rarity, I believe, but yeah... a fucking T-shirt!

I agree with a lot of what people are saying in this thread, and I'm just gonna throw out Steely Dan as a possibility. What do you think of them?? They had really high standards for what they released, and I would say they probably approached perfection more than most bands.

I always thought 38 Special was a HELL of a good band, I think they should have been way more famous than they ever got to be. They should be on any reasonable list of great bands, even a short list.

How about Weezer, too? They really stand out for me... they're just about exactly what a band should be.

Never listened to much Steely Dan, but I like all the stuff they play on the radio of "38 Special". Still, I'm not sure if the rest of their discography is solid enough. Some bands get a ton of songs played on the radio (like Led Zeppelin), while some bands only get a few songs out there. I probably only heard a handful of songs from those two bands.

Weezer is good, but their standards dropped after a while. After the red album, they started making too many albums too quickly, and I didn't care for some of those tracks. Like "In the Mall", where those words are the hook of the song. Not very good. emoticon

I legitimately, unironically love this 38 Special song, even though it sounds absolutely nothing like their earlier Southern rock/pop hits:

Song used to be all over the radio when I was young. Now it's as if it never happened emoticon

That's a great song! I have to admit, I had forgotten that that was by 38 Special (or maybe I never knew it was them in the first place). It sounds sort of like Bryan Adams to me, maybe with a little influence from Paul Young, or Don Henley. Anyway, good for 38 Special, for trying something unusual!

I think I'm gonna go with Pink Floyd. Your "animal tracks" comment is a bit of a head scratcher, but Animals was one of their best albums, imo. Not a fan of their Syd Barrett shit, but everything from More on was anything from really good to mind blowing. The Roger Waters-less version was missing a special something but still great. I especially like the stuff between Syd Barrett and Darkside Of The Moon, when they were trying to finally figure out what they were.

Like you said. There's other stuff to consider when picking a "best band" but I'm not all that educated on very many huge mainstream bands.

Alright... I'm listening to "Animals", and it seems I've completely misremembered that album. Pretty good, but I'm just wondering wtf album I was thinking of then. It probably was some of the Syd Barrett stuff. I remember hearing some of those, and then swearing off the early stuff altogether because it was too weird.

I suppose all their stuff with David Gilmour is where it's at, and if that were to be considered the real Pink Floyd, then Pink Floyd is probably a good candidate for a perfect band. I'm ashamed to say I'm not entirely well-versed on Floyd, aside from two or three of their albums.

Yeah, the Barrett shit was annoying and not at all pretty like what PF would become. One could make the argument that it's sorta trippy in it's own way. I just don't get whatever love for this verison exists.

I haven't listened to hardly any PF at all in a good decade, except that album from 2014, which was mostly outtakes from the previous album. Nice, chillin' stuff, though.

I would mostly recommend Umma Gumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Darkside, Animals and Wish You Were Here. I'm not the biggest fan of The Wall, but it's still pretty great. The next one, The Final Cut, was the only one which included Waters but not Gilmour, where as everything after that was Gilmour. The Final Cut was mostly like a soulless, less fun version of The Wall. Probably for the best that Gilmour took over.

Anything after Darkside wasn't really meant to be trippy, but Animals is great for a late night shroom trip. That goes triple for Meddle, Umma Gumma and Atom Heart Mother. I've shed many a tear while laughing hysterically at 4 am during shroom trips while those albums played. Nothing like it!

I wasn't into very many well-known bands when you made this post, but over the last couple years, I've gotten into such bands as Deep Purple, Judas Preist, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Steely Dan, Rainbow and even some solo stuff from Roger Waters and David Gilmour. All pretty consistent from what I've heard.

I still listen to Iron Maiden regularly, along with Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Moorhead, Floyd, the Stones, all that stuff. The best music came from the Brits.

I'm still completely ignorant when it comes to modern music though. I guess I haven't got my fill of the old stuff yet.

In your original post for this thread, you mentioned Creedence Clearwater Revival. Did you catch this amazing scene from American Horror Story 1984? It's a little over three minutes long. The best moment is at about 2:08 to 2:13, but if you can just tolerate the first couple minutes, they make that moment make a little (not much) sense.

youtube

Also, my favorite bands... I still like the basic old stuff. I would say Bad Company, 38 Special, early Foreigner, Van Halen, Boston (of course, ha ha), Rush, Triumph, Kansas, some Molly Hatchet, Loverboy, of course The Who, J Geils Band, etc are my favorite bands.
