Who do you think the best bands are? Of all time, or of the moment. I think the chemistry of a band is important to consider, because it's kind of like a machine. If all the pieces fit together, the groove is gonna be there, and it'll be music to your ears.

Also worth considering is a band's longevity, and how much shitty material they've put out. That's why I wouldn't put a band like Pink Floyd on this list, because they released an album full of animal tracks. FUCK... THAT...

My picks:

Creedence Clearwater Revival may be the best band ever. They fuckin' rocked, and only made a finite number of albums, but EVERY track is great. The same can be said about Led Zeppelin. Those guys never had any dud tracks. Or at least a mere handful of mediocre ones at best.

The Rolling Stones never disappoint me, either. They've released a lot more material, which gives them more room for error for the harsh critics, but I tend to like all their tracks. They have so many goddamn hits! The Beatles got a little more druggie/weird with some tracks, but they're otherwise almost on par.

Another thing about these bands is that they didn't change their core lineup much, if at all. It's all about that chemistry, and these are generic examples, but I still fucking love these bands. There are probably a few other great examples out there, but I can't think of them right now.

There's a few on there I like, almost enough to say they're the "best", but even as great as Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, and The Ramones are, they still have a small few stinkers that taint their discography. However, you may be right about The Stooges. They only had 4 albums, and they're all great.

My point for the thread is which bands just don't have stinkers, and are all solid. I'll agree that Metallica up to the Black album is great, but then what do they do? Cover albums, St. Anger, etc...

The Weirdness is kinda stupid, but it really never bothered me. I think they're all pretty fun tracks. "My Idea of Fun", "Passing Cloud", "Trollin"...

I've heard Animals once maybe, and it was rubbing me the wrong way. Maybe I'm being too hard on it. I'll give it another listen though. Don't get me wrong about Pink Floyd though. They've got some great shit out there, but as a psychedelic rock band of the era, they get a bit too weird sometimes.

There are a bunch of bands that I could say are near perfect, at least up to a certain point. I think Radiohead up to In Rainbows was really solid. Then the King of Limbs came out and that was kinda shit. I think Maiden's "Final Frontier" is shit too, but everything before that is great or at least really good.

Never listened to much Steely Dan, but I like all the stuff they play on the radio of "38 Special". Still, I'm not sure if the rest of their discography is solid enough. Some bands get a ton of songs played on the radio (like Led Zeppelin), while some bands only get a few songs out there. I probably only heard a handful of songs from those two bands.

Weezer is good, but their standards dropped after a while. After the red album, they started making too many albums too quickly, and I didn't care for some of those tracks. Like "In the Mall", where those words are the hook of the song. Not very good. emoticon

Alright... I'm listening to "Animals", and it seems I've completely misremembered that album. Pretty good, but I'm just wondering wtf album I was thinking of then. It probably was some of the Syd Barrett stuff. I remember hearing some of those, and then swearing off the early stuff altogether because it was too weird.

I suppose all their stuff with David Gilmour is where it's at, and if that were to be considered the real Pink Floyd, then Pink Floyd is probably a good candidate for a perfect band. I'm ashamed to say I'm not entirely well-versed on Floyd, aside from two or three of their albums.

I still listen to Iron Maiden regularly, along with Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Moorhead, Floyd, the Stones, all that stuff. The best music came from the Brits.

I'm still completely ignorant when it comes to modern music though. I guess I haven't got my fill of the old stuff yet.

Creedence is also funny in terms of Big Lebowski.

"And was there anything of value in the car?"

"Oh, uh... yeah, uh... a tape deck, some Creedence tapes..."

I've seen at least one of your favorite bands live. And I worked with a crazy old man who claims to have opened for Creedence once. And Loverboy. I don't think I believe him though.
