Are you really counting The Addams Family and Darkman for the challenge? Not that I give two shits, but I don't see any 'horror' tag for either of them. One's a family movie and one's a superhero movie.

Lol Nicko mentioned the same thing but it's a fair point.

Well Wiki and Google reference Darkman as an action/superhero horror movie so I watched it on that basis even though it's been years and years since I last saw it and could only remember his face as being the only "horrifying" aspect of it. But then so is Deadpool and Deadpool ain't horror. There wasn't even much gore for a Sam Raimi movie so yeah it was probably more suitable for the sci-fi challenge but if there is a horror tag somewhere for it, then it can still count. Remember it's not just IMDb, it can be Wiki, RT or any other major movie reference/database site for a movie to count. Having said all that, and if I was using my own judgement, I don't personally feel Darkman is a horror movie therefore I am going to remove it.

In regards to The Addams Family, Wiki references it as a "supernatural" black comedy and I would say anything "supernatural" should be allowed to count in the challenge as a horror subgenre, and in the spirit of the month of Halloween. Well ok, so Ghost is a "supernatural" romance and that wouldn't count however The Addams Family has enough macabre elements to count as horror and it features on a few "horror movies for kids" lists. Also the recent animated version has a horror tag on IMDb, even though the orignal movie (or series) doesn't... consistency please IMDb! So I will keep The Addams Family because damn it, I have to watch movies with my kids every weekend and it's a struggle to find horror ones suitable for a 6 year old.

And there are some family "horror" movies. I mean, don't forget this scene, which whilst part of a stage play, is still going to be some kids first introduction to blood splatter:

I have no idea why wikipedia has the balls the call Darkman a horror film. I think they want to jump to that conclusion based on the director's previous movies, even though he really started to deviate from the genre at that point. Hell, Raimi hasn't really touched horror in ages. Drag Me to Hell doesn't count because it's horse shit, and he only directed one or so episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead. He probably forgot what horror is by now...

Off the top of my head, I wouldn't be so quick to classify anything supernatural as horror, but going through lists of supernatural movies, they do tend to list a majority that are horror. I never really put two and two together, probably because I simply don't like supernatural stuff for the most part. I mean, I like the idea of it, but I find the execution of them often leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

With all that said, there are a few "family horror" movie types that aren't labeled as horror. What would you say about movies like Ernest Scared Stupid, Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Casper?

I'd add The Witches, Goosebumps, Coraline, Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Hotel Transylvania and probably a whole bunch of others (yeah the most infamous "is it horror or not?" being Jaws) to that list of movies which IMDb doesn't label as horror but other sites, like Wiki, might.

I think "family horror" or "kids horror" should be considered a kind of subgenre. I mean, if the movie contains witches, ghosts, monsters, etc., or anything of a macabre nature, and it's more than just a mere "element" of the movie then it should be - especially if younger kids find it even remotely frightening.

When I accepted being host of the challenge I did want to consider allowing any movies that are in keeping with the spirit of the Halloween season, so yeah I feel that a movie like aforementioned Addams Family or indeed A NIghtmare Before Christmas should be permitted (yeah, funnily and conveniently enough I was planning on giving that one a rewatch with the kids) but apparently you won't find that one being labelled or tagged as "horror" pretty much anywhere despite it being chock-full of creepy, macabre images and "scary" ghouls and monsters living under your bed...
