David Bowie

Jan '16
RIP?! Terrible news to wake up to, right? Now, I may not have been familiar with ALL of his discography, but goddamn it, I had most of it! His music got a little weird at times, but he also released some classic tunes. He had loads of charisma, and was a damn decent actor too.

What are your favorite Bowie tunes?

image - Afraid
- Ashes to Ashes
- Blue Jean
- Cat People
- Fashion
- Heroes
- Modern Love
- Moonage Daydream
- Oh! You Pretty Things
- Panic in Detroit
- Queen Bitch
- Suffragette City
- Rebel Rebel
- Velvet Goldmine

and my favorite: Slow Burn

is "Afraid" the same song as "I'm Afraid of Americans"?

Also, he was pretty amazing in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976). The movie Watchmen would probably have been very different if he had not inspired the Adrian Veidt character, with his performance in that film.

Different songs. "Afraid" was on his 2002 album Heathen. I don't know the other one.

I actually own The Man who Fell to Earth. I've watched it a few times, but I still don't understand it. emoticon

yeah, it's a pretty bizarre movie. Some parts of it seem to be a bizarre combination of Carlos Castaneda, Timothy Leary, and Arthur C. Clarke. But, I like the basic idea of this guy coming from an advanced civilization, who can remember enough of his own technology to leapfrog our planet through several decades, or possibly centuries, of progress.

This is I'm Afraid of Americans. It gets sort of Phildickian, towards the end, if you think about it.

He was also pretty interesting to watch in The Prestige (2006), that movie with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as dueling magicians. He was supposed to be Nicola Tesla... I forget if they actually named his character Tesla, but that was definitely who he was supposed to represent. He wasn't on the screen for very many minutes, but he really had that otherworldly, ethereal quality that lots of people associate with Tesla.

Yes, he played Tesla. Fantastic movie. I had to rewatch it the day after I saw it, and I made everyone I knew watch it. It was then that I discovered Bowie's different colored eyes.

I always wanted to meet the dude
If we ignore that terrible first album of folk tunes, which I dont even consider bowie, he gave us 14 years of great albums (except that album of cover tunes)

The Width of a Circle
All the Madmen
Quicksand
The Bewlay Brothers
Five Years
Time
Sweet Thing->reprise
We Are the Dead
Ashes to Ashes

Not many true geniuses left now
pete townshend, roger waters, mike burkett, prince, thurston moore
A bit depressing

Like Uncle Arthur? emoticon

I'll have to listen to those songs you listed when I get home as I'm unfamiliar with most of them.

I think I only fully heard that album about 5x
The gulf between that and the next, perhaps his body was possessed by aliens

make sure you check out Cygnet Committee his greatest song, personally I would love to cover his Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise) song

I just listened to all those tracks, and as Captain Obvious would say... they're all solid. Some of them I've always liked, but never knew the names of till just now.

China Girl was actually an Iggy Pop song, but Bowie's version is indeed better.
